the kids are standing on the overpass
throwing rocks at cars as they go past
the people driving home are just a blur
they’re unaware that they’re being harassed
the talk show jocks just talk and talk
the kids just keep on throwing rocks
but no one swerves  

when traffic starts to clear the kids go home
but one boy wants to throw just one more stone
his arm arcs smooth and sends his last rock high
a windshield breaks above the traffic’s drone
the driver panics when it smashes
swerves hard left and then he crashes
so surprised

the cars are driving fast over the bridge
heading for their houses on the ridge
the people on the hill look down to see
the streets laid out in tiny perfect grids
the televisions scream all night
with blinding blue and ochre light
wordlessly
